Ah, where to start... Wednesday was the beginning of our wedding rehearsals and we continued rehearsing until Friday night! Here in Zambia the bridal party does different steps to enter into the church and into the reception, so that is why we rehearsed for so long. I really did enjoy it though. I had a great time getting to know those that were on the line-up with me. The night before the wedding we all stayed at the matrons house. We had a lot of fun, but didn't get much sleep! After the wedding ceremony at the church we went to Mwandi Inn to take pics and then we headed to the reception! It was such a fun day!!!

Here are some more pictures from the wedding...

Lubasi, Kali, Me, and Beene

Sunday morning Helen picked me up and took me out to Kakolo with her. I wrote last time that she was taking care of some newborn twins whose mom had passed away after giving birth. Well, the father is unable to care for the twins and no one else in the family could afford to care for these little girls. They asked Helen if she would care for them for 4-6 months until they could eat porridge. None of the orphanages here would take them because the father is still living, so Helen agreed to help. A couple weeks ago the Dunphy's volunteered to take care of them for a week. During that time i went over for 2 nights to help out so that Beth could sleep. The twins are now back with Helen in Kakolo which is about a 45 min drive from me. Its not so easy to get there... Sunday she was already here so she came and picked me up so i could help her out for the day. I spent the night and came into Riverside in the morning with the kids from Faith Childrens Village. I am going to go out again tomorrow night to help. Please pray for Helen that she would be able to get the sleep she needs! She runs a clinic on Tuesday's and Friday's and also helps with the administration of the orphanage so she has many responsibilities. Please also pray for these two little girls. They are now 3 1/2 weeks old! They are growing but please pray for their continued strength and health, but more importantly that they would be saved at an early age. Also for the father and family of these girls that thru the contact of Helen and Pastor Mwanisa they may come to know Christ as their Savior.

Here are some pics of the girls.... Helen has named them Leah and Rachel.

Leah

Rachel

Leah and Rachel

When i got back from Kakolo Monday morning this is the present Isabi left for me...

Tuesday night i had some friends over to play Settlers of Catan! I finally had my first case of malaria on Thursday last week. I had been experiencing some pain in my back for about 4 days and just wasn't feeling quite normal. My friend Helen, who is a nurse, recommended that i go get a blood slide to see if it was malaria. I wasn't feeling particularly sick that day so i thought if i still wasn't feeling good by Monday i would go get tested. But, Toni was already taking her girls in for malaria tests so she offered to take me. I went, and got tested and it came back positive for malaria. I was a little surprised cause i sure didn't feel that sick. I went home and took the medicine and thats when i started to feel real sick. Mostly just queasy and a slight headache but very tired. I tried resting during the weekend and to me i did, but, it was probably still a little much. Friday night before Young Adults Bible study we played a game of football/soccer. I love playing and don't get many chances to play so i did! I didn't run around too much tho. Then Saturday i was feeling fine so i cleaned my apt then helped my friend make final decisions on the deocorations for the wedding in a couple weeks, but after that, i was beat. I slept for a bit then went to Teens Bible study. After that we headed up to the playing field as normal and i played just a bit of volleyball then walked up to the Petersons house for a birthday dinner with Carissa. Then home to sleep! But the malaria medicine kept me awake until 12 or after. Then Sunday a friend came over in the morning to make 2 cakes for her brothers b-day then i went for church. I wasn't feeling too well, a bit dizzy and tired but i thought i would be fine cause you only have to sit in church. Then my friend Beene came over for lunch and after we headed to where she will be having her reception. We wanted to check it out so that we could make final decisions on the deocrations. After that i was sooo tired. It was so hot out and walking around made it so much worse!! Needless to say last night i slept real good. I think i am over the malaria, i still am a bit tired today but overall i feel much better. Thank you to those who were praying for me!!

It's been awhile since i posted anything so i thought i would give a quick update on whats been going on!

During our mid-term break i was able to go out to Kakolo to spend time with Helen. I went with her to ladies Bible Study there in Kakolo and also helped a bit in the clinic on Friday. Mostly just packing medicine. On Thursday we went out for a walk. Some of the famers had begun to burn down their gardens so that they could start fresh again. We came upon a house that looked as though their grass roof had caught on fire and was smoldering in the house. We didn't see anyone there so we thought maybe it was planned, but still thought it strange. When we passed on our way back we found the family standing there so we went to find out what happened. They said they left that morning to do the farming and had just now come back to find that their home had burned. The fires that were started to burn down the fields spread and somehow a spark had jumped and caught their grass roof on fire. It then fell into the house and burned all their mattresses, blankets, clothes, and food. Thankfully Helen had some extra blankets at the house and some clothes and food to give them.

The second week of mid-term the Haflers invited me to go camping with their family. We went to Nsobe which is about an hour and a half away from Kitwe. We had a great time!! I actually caught my first fish ever!! I was also able to take the kids out canoeing and we got to see a monitor lizard!!

This month has been a bit busy and will continue on that way! My good friend Beene is getting married on 27 October and she has asked me to be on her line-up! I feel so privleged to be a part of her special day. So the past few weekends we have been busy getting everything organized for the big day! Last weekend we went to see what they could do with my hair since it is a bit different ;) We went to one of salons in town who assured her that they new how to do "mazungu" hair. It turned out ok, but she would like it to be better so we will try again soon!! I can't wait, and don't worry i will take lots of pics so that everyone can see!!

Last week on Thursday i got a text from Helen saying that she was taking care of newborn twins!! The mom had passed away after giving birth and the father asked Helen to care for the twins for a couple of days till he could arrange for someone else to care for the girls. Of course i had to go visit to see these precious little babies!! Sue and i drove out on Friday afternoon to bring some formula and nappies. They were so cute!!! I can remember the feelings of apprehension, excitement, and sadness. I was nervous about going because I didn’t know what to expect, yet I was excited because it was something I have dreamed about for a long time, and I was sad too because I had to leave those I love. Looking back, I can see that God has done some amazing things in me. He has shown me more of who He is and I am truly overwhelmed by His faithfulness to me. I am so undeserving of His love, but I am truly grateful for it.

Central Africa Baptist College is on mid-term break for 2 weeks. The first six weeks of this semester have been very busy. We started off the term with a block class on the book of Hebrews taught by Dr. Allan Patterson. The second week into the semester there was a mission’s team from Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in SC that came to minister in the college. During their two weeks here they were involved in ministry which our students were also able to participate it. The students also benefited from listening to lectures from those on this team. I also greatly benefited from this team as one of the team members was a librarian from Bob Jones University.

This semester we have 6 new students from the Kitwe area making our total number of students 21. Next year we are looking forward to more students from Kenya coming to join us and also a student from Mali.

The library project is still quite the project! We have several students here who are on work scholarship. There wasn’t enough work to keep them busy at the college and so we were able to place Andy in the library. He has finished labeling the first 1,700 books that were entered and is now working for 2 hours each day on entering the books into the database. I then export that information and assign the Dewey Decimal number. It is a long process but by him helping me it is going much faster. I am so thankful for his help!!

Please continue to pray with us for the construction of our building. We are still meeting in a house that we use for the dorm and classrooms. Our building is near completion but we are still waiting for the roof to be done. Please pray that the remaining amount needed will be supplied and that the roof can be completed before the rains come. It is our desire that we are able to fully move into this new building by February of 2008.

Last month I was able to participate in an activity for the teen girls of the 5 different Faith Baptist Churches in our area. My friend Mulenga from the college and I wanted to teach these girls about different life issues that we knew these teen girls were facing. We both have had a burden for the teen girls to see them more established and secure in their walk with God. It was great to hear from them after that they were challenged from God’s Word to change things in their lives.

This past weekend we had a “Trip of a Lifetime” for the teens here at my church. We did not tell the teens where we were going, they just came, got on the bus and we went. It was a great time of fellowship and of course eating!! We had a barbeque with all kinds of meat and of course potato salad and coleslaw! It was a great time to get all the teens together and enjoy God’s beautiful creation!

Thank you all so much for your prayers and support! Last night i woke up to see Isabi chasing a big ole' cockroach that was crawling across a pillow that was next to my head!! only at the time i didn't realize it was a cockroach cause i was half asleep. I saw him knock it to the ground so i didn't bother cause i knew he would kill it... well instead he decided to play with it for a long while. Then he would put it in his mouth and fling it up to play some more. and he almost flung it up on my bed!! i was too tired to actually get up to do anything about it, and he had gotten it stuck between the dresser and nightstand so i went back to sleep. then this morning when i was sweeping is when i realized it was a cockroach!!! i was soooo disgusted!! that thing was on my BED!!!! i don't know if it came in on its own or if he brought it in, either way its disgusting!!!!!!!

this is the dead cockroach!!

THEN... i was getting ready to go to teens Bible study when i hear something out on the porch. i step out to see Isabi walking thru the doorway with a live bird in his mouth!! so, i started yelling at him to go outside to no avail... then he takes it under my bed!! he was trying to play with it under there but i wasn't so keen on that!! My friend Mulenga and I worked at camp in April and felt a burden for the teen girls. We decided to put together a time where certain questions could be addressed from the Bible. Mrs. Dunphy also helped us organize it all. We had a panel to answer different questions regarding relationships, appearance, devotions and many other topics. I was on the panel along with some visiting girls from the USA, one of the pastors wives, and Mrs. Dunphy.

We were so thrilled to hear from the girls afterwards that they really enjoyed their time and learned a lot. So we Praise the Lord for that!!

Mulenga and I

A missions team from Mount Calvary Baptist Church came for 2 weeks and while they were here we had a game night with all the college students and some of the girls from FBCR. First we played a game of soccer. I was so excited cause I love to play! And I scored my teams only point on a penalty kick! =) Then we went to the school and played some more games inside. We had a great time!!

The girls after...

The 6th of August was Farmer's Day here in Zambia so we had a field day at our playing field. We had 47 Pastors and Church leaders attending! I was a little nervous with so many coming and coordinating it all, but it went very smoothly!

Here is a picture of Dr. Patterson teaching...

Then our regular class for our second term started on Monday 23 July. This term we have 7 new students! It is so fun to see how the college is growing! We have accepted some more international students and look forward to them joining us in February of next year!

The construction of our new campus building is coming along! Please pray with us that He will provide soon!

Last week we were without power for 3 days. It made my job here quite boring!! A lot of what I do requires the computer so without electricity i was very bored!! Also since I live on the same property as the church my house also didn't have power! Thankfully God has given me many good friends to help me out! I spent one night with the church secretary and her family so that i could take a hot bath in the morning and have some nice cooked food! I am so thankful for good friends!!

The team from the US arrived this evening. This next week we will be organizing some game times at the playing field with them. Also this coming weekend we are having a time with the teen girls from the surrounding churches to talk about life issues. Please pray for me as i will be on the panel answering questions!!

I think that is all for now!

oh, one more thing... the other night i heard a knock on my door and when i went to answer it this is what i found...

a chicken foot!!

Greetings from Zambia!!

Wow, I can’t believe I have already been home and am back here at my home in Zambia. I am so glad I was able to be home and to see many of you while I was there. I really enjoyed my time at home with my family and friends! Here is a picture of the fam…

Thank you all so much for praying for my traveling, I know God definitely answered your prayers for me! I arrived to the Gatwick airport in London Monday morning and made my connection to Heathrow airport by coach bus with no problems! I was kind of nervous because I had two heavy bags and I was alone, but I made it just fine! Once I reached Heathrow I left my bags and went into London to meet with a friend for a little sightseeing and lunch. I was able to see Buckingham Palace and the British Museum and also get some good coffee!! I got back on the train and headed for the airport to catch my next flight. I arrived in Lusaka Tuesday morning around 730 am a little tired but very thankful to be there. I tried getting on an earlier flight to Ndola, but it didn’t work out so I waited there in Lusaka airport till 1.00 pm for my last flight. But, it was so cold there, ok maybe only 50’ but it was cold to me. I couldn’t believe it!! Since I was flying within the country I was only allowed to take one bag at 20 kg, but I had two bags at 23 kg each! Thankfully they did not charge me for my extra weight!! Amidst all my changing planes and airports and 39 hours of traveling God allowed me to keep all my luggage and everything went so smoothly!!

Me in front of Buckingham Palace

It’s so good to be back here and reunite with my friends here in Zambia. Our school term is starting on Monday so I am busy working on that. In a couple weeks a group from the States will be coming to help here at the college and the surrounding churches. It will be a good time to help them get to know the people and the ministry here.

brushing my teeth

This picture looks innocent enough, but there is quite a story behind it! Sunday morning i went to brush my teeth before church. I put my toothbrush under the tap and turned the water on. However, a frog happened to be in the tap and so when i turned the water on he came flying out and landed on my TOOTHBRUSH!! So naturally i screamed and threw my toothbrush! My heart was beating so fast and i couldn't stop laughing... but sadly no one was there to laugh with me!! Thankfully i had an extra toothbrush and i was still able to brush my teeth, but now i am a little leary of using my bathroom sink!! =)

my most recent prayer letter

God has been so faithful to me here and has been teaching me and growing me so much! At the end of February I was able to go to Kakolo to visit Helen who lives out at Faith Children’s Village. During rainy season the road to the village is very muddy and hard to manage, but thankfully there had been no heavy rain before I came so we were able to pass ok. Helen runs a clinic at the village and we were able to help pack some medicines and also come and see how the clinic runs. It was an awesome opportunity to see what she does every week. We were also able to attend teens Bible study and Church at Faith Baptist Church Kakolo.

Our first term of Central Africa Baptist College is coming to a close on June 15th. This year we currently have 15 students and are encouraged that more are interested in attending next term. God has brought many men here who love the Lord and desire to serve Him. There is also a young lady who is new this term. I count it such a privilege to be a part of this ministry here. Please continue to pray for our new building. A couple weeks ago we were able to go out and see the progress on the building. The second floor slab has been poured and now we are working on finishing the inside of the first story to hopefully use for classes next term starting in July. There is still a need for more funds to come in to complete this building. Please pray with us that the Lord would provide in His time.

The students and faculty of Central Africa Baptist College

A month ago a TRACS representative came to Zambia to meet with us concerning accreditation. It was a busy week filled with meetings but the outcome was very profitable as we were able to get good advice. The application for TRACS has been put on hold for now as we try to better establish ourselves as a college first.

The Library project is still a work in progress! But thankfully I have been able to assign the Dewey Decimal number to the first 2,000 books… only 5,000 more to go! Currently, I have someone helping me stick on the numbers on the books and then we will be able to arrange them in the proper order. It is a long process but I know in the end it will be worth it. Next week there is another visitor coming from the states and he will be able to help me enter books and assign the Dewey Decimal number. It is such a huge blessing to me because I don’t seem to have the time to do it myself!

My work at the college has increased a bit with Phil Hunt leaving and also our Director of Operations. I am now helping a bit with the financial side of things. I have really enjoyed the variation in my work and I also really enjoy the busy side of it! Right now I am trying to prepare things for next term as we will be pre-registering our students in a couple of weeks.

During our mid-term break I was able to work at our camp for a week. It was such an awesome experience that I will never forget. God taught me so much about myself that week and areas that I need to work on. Yet he also used me to lead a girl to the Lord! It was such an awesome privilege. She also attends my church here and this week I will begin a discipleship program with her. The camp itself was a real camping experience we all slept in tents and had all the comforts that that brings!! It was so fun to play games with the teens and also spend time with them in services and studying God’s Word. There were many decisions made for the Lord that week and all the praise goes to Him!

Thank you so much for all your prayers. It is so encouraging to me to know that there are so many back home praying for me!!

Camp

I got back yesterday from a week of counseling at camp! I went last week for 3 days for counselor training. It was a great time just to get to know the other counselors and also be reminded and encouraged for counseling. The camp was held for teens from the 6 different Faith Baptist Churches. God allowed me the privilge to help counsel. I was placed with another counselor because there were some teens who only spoke Bemba... and since i don't, it would have made it very hard!! In my cabin there were 10 campers, 2 of them were from my church here in Riverside. I had the awesome privilege of leading my camper Pezo to the Lord. I started praying for her Monday afternoon when she said that she hadn't made that decision yet and by Tuesday morning she raised her hand and said that she wanted to be saved!!! I was so excited for her and now i will be able to help disciple her along the way as she goes to my church!! There were 12 campers who accepted Christ as their Savior and many other decisions were also made. It was such an awesome week, very tiring but definitely worth every minute!! God taught me so much about myself and areas that i need to change as well!
The Hunt family and Tori left this week. It was hard to see them go as i don't know when i will see them again! So things will be a lot different without them!!
Work at the college is going well. There is a lot of transition going on with Phil leaving and also another man resigned so many new changes taking place. But it is awesome to see the progress that is being made. And there is a college student who will be coming in everyday to help input the library books into the program for me!! It is a huge blessing for me!!
I think that is all for now... i will post pictures later, it won't let me right now?!!?

Update

Its been awhile since i have posted anything on here and decided i should sit down and just do it instead of thinking about it.

Work at the college has been going great. The semester started 12 February with a block class on Minor Prophets taught by Pastor Craig Muri. It was great to meet him and hear him preach in our church. There are 3 new students from Kenya and 2 new students from southern Zambia. There are a couple other new students from our own community. It is awesome to see the men and one lady God has brought to the college. Last week for chapel we took the opportunity to all go up to the new college campus. They were pouring the last slab for the second story. It was amazing to see how far along it has come. It is still in need of the whole second story to be built so please be in prayer about that. As soon as the first floor is complete we will move the classes up to the building. Our goal is to be in the new building by next term which starts in July.

The library is slowly coming along. There are still roughly 3,000 books that need to be cataloged in the computer system. I have been working on assigning the dewey decimal number to the 2,000 books that are already at the college. It is very tedious work that seems to take me hours to do. I am hoping that in the next couple of weeks i will be able to get all the books assigned and labels attached and filed correctly on the shelf.

Concerning TRACS accreditation, there will be a TRACS representative coming to Zambia from 25 -29 March. During that time he will be meeting with Phil and Steve and determing whether or not it will work to become accredited through TRACS. Please pray for us during this time that we will have everything in order and that things will go smoothly.

Just a little something that happened today. A student from the school came to get me to tell me there was a snake. I went out and found that the snake was right outside my house near the baptistry!! It was just a baby python and so it wasn't too big... but i am a little nervous as to where the mother is????

Yesterday was Youth Day. The youth from our church and a couple other churches met at the ball field to play some games. There was volleyball, basketball, and soccer. I played on the girls volleyball team and we won!! It was very exciting because usually Riverside loses, we even lost a month ago when we played the same church!

Thank you all so much for your prayers and letters. It is always so encouraging to know that there are people at home praying for me!!!

Work permit

I just wanted to show you all that today i officially picked up my work permit!! This morning Tori came in and shared with me that one of her teachers talked with one of the men that was in the boat when it capsized and he told him that just as they were pulling the last man out of the river, a crocodile surfaced!!!!! He said that the river is full of crocodiles!! All the more reason to have the children come by road!? So thankful that God granted protection to these children all the times they crossed the river! What an awesome God we serve!!

FCV

I just thought I would share this with you all becuase I thought it was a good picture of how God is completely in control. I posted some pictures a couple weeks ago of the Kafue river. This is the same river that the children from the orphange cross everyday to attend school here in Riverside. The rains the past couple of weeks have been very heavy and have caused the river to start flooding. They normally took the pontoon boat across but since the water level was rising they could no longer use the pontoon. The children then started taking the boats you saw in my pictures. I don't know if you could see from the pictures but, the boats aren't necessarily safe. Usually there is one man rowing while the other man is bailing out the water! A week ago, the rain was so bad that it flooded one of the streets that the children use and so they were advised not to come that day for school. Then they were told that the river water had risen a lot and that the current had become very strong and since most of the children do not know how to swim it was decided to let them off of school until a safer way came available. This morning Tori was told that just yesterday as a boat was crossing the river, it capsized! Thankfully the men that were on the boat were able to swim safely to shore. However, the boat never surfaced, or if it did it was way down the river! But if that would have been the children from the orphanage it would have been a much different outcome. Most of the children do not know how to swim and with the current being so strong who knows what would have happened! So we praise God that He is in complete control. He knows exactly what He is doing and we are so thankful that He chose to keep the orphanage children safe all those times they have crossed the river. The children haven't come to school for over a week now, the rains just keep coming. Helen, the nurse out there has a truck that all the kids could pile in the back of, but the cost of gas is too much and right now the road isn't much better. Even four wheel drive vehicles are getting stuck. Please pray for this situation. We know that God knows and that he will provide a way for the children to come back to school, in His own timing!

Frog...

The other night, Isabi, my cat, decided to bring a frog in the house. It is the first time he has ever done that. And usually when he catches things he eats them… so I just assumed he would eat the frog. The frog looked dead to me, it was on its back, and it wasn’t moving… and since Isabi wouldn’t eat it, I decided to get the broom and sweep it out… well it wasn’t dead… it jumped, and so did I, plus I think I screamed a little too! Then it jumped behind the couch. I don’t really like frogs so I wasn’t really fond of the idea of catching the frog… so I got the caretaker to come in and take it out for me. He told me that if Isabi would have eaten it, he probably would have gotten really sick because this particular frog is poisonous if you eat it!!!

“dead” frog…..

alive frog….

Kafue River

On Saturday Cherith, Grandma Hunt, Emily, Mwaba and I went to the Kafue River. Mwaba is a young adult here at Faith and she was willing to take us down to see the river and cross on the boats. We got there and already people were giving us a hard time for having our cameras so we tried to be discreet in taking pictures. We didn't want to offend anyone. Once we got to the river Grandma and Emily were a little nervous to cross because there are some crocidiles and hippos in the river. However, I really wanted to see a hippo or crocidile and thats part of the reason i went!! I thought that would be awesome!! so eventually we talked them into crossing. Once we were on the other side, there really wasn't much to see so we turned around and came right back!! It was a fun little adventure!!

This is one of the roads we took to get to the river... i was a little nervous that i would slip and fall right in... but i didn't thankfully!!

This is the road coming up from the river...

Crossing the river...

Grandma Hunt and Emily Hafler... It is so cool to see God answer prayer! I was never really worried about getting it, but i was just wondering when. But God's timing is always perfect and for that I am so grateful. I will travel to Lusaka on Monday to pick it up!! Thank you to all of you who have been praying for this!!

The library is finally getting started. I am so thankful for Phil Hunts mom who is here visiting but has volunteered her time to catalog all the books for me. It is a huge answer to prayer for me because she is not only going to help me catalog them but she is also going to show me how to assign the Dewey decimal number. It was something that was completely overwhelming to me and i wasn't sure even how to start. But she came and has worked in a library before and has been so gracious to help me!! Just a couple weeks ago we started cataloging the books and as of yesterday started putting them into our software program. Its such a relief to me. We still have a very long way to go, there are over 5,000 books and we only have around 1,000 cataloged so far. But it is a start!!

Our semester is starting a month from now on February 12th. We will start with a block class for that first week and then the following week regular classes will start. Yesterday I worked with the vice president and we were able to send out a lot of acceptance letters. We are thrilled to have more students coming from Kenya! Please pray for them as they have to get their student visas and raise the needed money to attend the school. I am still working on getting all the records and systems set up. The first one is of Kadona and Willie. A week and a half ago Sister Felictus passed away. She was Kadona's mother and Willie's grandmother. Willie was one that always came up to visit Tori and me! He was so fun to have around. Now Kadona and Willie are moving to Lusaka!! It was so hard to say goodbye because they probably won't be back to visit!! Please pray for both of them though, they are going to stay with Willie's mom and from what we know she is unsaved. Kadona and Willie have both accepted Christ as their saviour but they need the discipleship! All of the IFM missionaries went over to Tori's house and two of the guest speakers that came for the conference were also there. It was a nice time to just relax after our long week. The only thing i didn't particularly enjoy was the caterpillars!! Tori bought some at the market and decided to serve them at the braii. They are a delicacy here and she thought it would be good for us to try them!! I have attached the pictures so that you can see what they made me eat! First you have to soak them in the water and then you fry them in a pan with oil and onions. When they are done they are very crunchy and dry!! but you can still see their heads!! That part really bothered me, but at least they weren't squishy!!

Leadership Conference

Leadership Conference has already come and gone!! Its amazing how fast it came and then how fast it was over!! The conference started on Monday afternoon with general sessions every night and morning. Then workshops were held throughout the day Tuesday through Friday. I was in charge of the registration and other general stuff throughout the conference. We had approximately 140 people attend the conference!! This years theme was Building a Biblical Home. There was a lot of good material given out to each guest from the workbook and our prayer is that these people will go home and put into practice what they have learned from the conference. During the conference I was able to help a little with the cooking. Each day we provided lunch for 80 people. The picture is of me "helping" stir the Nshima!! It was tough!! and the charcoal was burning my feet!!! The other picture is of the teens who came to help by washing the dishes and serving the water!! It was a very busy week, but worth it all!! It was so awesome to see the way God put everything together!!

Prayer Request

I just wanted to ask for prayer concerning my work permit. My file is still lost in Lusaka and my tourist visa expires on Tuesday 12 December. So what that means is, that I either need to get an extension on my tourist visa or leave the country until my work permit is approved. The problem is I have already extended my tourist visa the maximum amount. On Tuesday I will be going to the immigration office and explaining to them my situation. The lady in Lusaka said that they should extend my tourist visa until my work permit file can be found and processed. Please pray that I will be able to talk to the right people at the immigration office in Kitwe and that they will extend my visa with no problems. Also please continue to pray that my file would be found in Lusaka and that it would be processed soon!!
We are on the last day of our Leadership Conference. It has been a great week!! It is sad that it is over! There were only a few set backs but everything was in God's control and it went according to His plan!! I will write more details next week and try to post some pictures!
Thank you for your prayers!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!

For Thanksgiving all the IFM missionaries got together and celebrated at the Washers home in Garneton. I spent the night at Tori's house and Helen also joined us. Tori made us pumpkin ice cream and we watched a movie on her laptop! It was a fun night. That morning we got up and cooked all the food and then headed out to Garneton. It was so nice to get together with the family that God has given me here in Zambia. We ate all the traditional dishes that we would back in the states. We were even able to find a couple turkeys!! After we ate all the kids put on a little program for us on Thanksgiving! It was really cute! Then we shared just one of the many blessings that God has given to us this year. For me it was just seeing God at work in my life. Looking over the past year He has taken me to many different places and has helped me grow so much. Thinking of where I was a year ago and then where I am now- I just see God's faithfulness to me, and it is overwhelming. A verse that God has been impressing upon me is "to whom much has been given much more shall be required." God has granted to me eternal life through His only Son, and if thats all that He did for me, He would still be an awesome and loving God. But He has given me a wonderful Christian family and friends. He has given me health and food and clothes. He has done so much for me that I in turn need to be giving back to Him. God showed me that so many times I take my health for granted. Yesterday on our way home we stopped at the hospital to visit a lady from the church who has been sick since I arrived here in September. Going through the hospital and seeing the many patients that were there and realizing that most of them will die soon, was a very eye opening experience for me. God has truly blessed me with good health and so many times I take it for granted. Another thing I am thankful for is that God also answered a prayer for me. The Leadership Conference is coming up in just one week. For the conference we are printing a workbook that is 200 pages and we are making 225 books, which is about 45,000 copies. Our copier here is not very reliable, and to make that many copies was a big burden on us. On Wednesday it got to the point where the copier wouldn't even print one page without a paper jam! It was very frustrating to the church secretary and I who are working on this huge project. But then God showed me that He is faithful even in the "little" things, Kristie Washer was in town and had stopped by the church and I was talking with her. She mentioned to me that they have a rice o'graph machine and that there is someone out there in Garneton that would be able to run the machine and finish the copying for us!! It is such a huge burden lifted off of our shoulders and I am so thankful for it!! It will save us so much time and it will also save wear on our copier! Just one more thing to add to my list of things to thank God for!!

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided --

Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Update from Zambia!!

17 November 2006

Greetings from Zambia!!

First of all I would like to share something that God showed me today in my devotions. I was reading Matthew 6 verses 22-23 which reads "The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!" I did further study on it and the passage really started to make sense. Take for instance a tight rope walker; he focuses his eye on something in the distance. If he were to look down at the rope he would fall because he would become dizzy. Also it is very hard to keep focused on something when your vision is not clear. In my Christian walk I need to make sure that my eye is steady and singly on Jesus Christ and Him alone. It is only then that there will be true light in my life. If there are things that are making my eye or focus unclear then I need to get rid of them, so that I can fully pursue that which is heavenly and not earthly!

The Leadership Conference is only 2 weeks away and there is still much to do. Every year there is a workbook that is handed out to each conference guest with all of the notes from the different workshops. I was able to get started on the copies this week and Lord willing the copier will make it through all these copies! Please pray that God would begin to work in the hearts of the people attending the conference. We want to see God do great and mighty things but that can only be accomplished through much prayer!! I have also been continuing the work on the student records. I have found a program that we will be using to keep track of the grades and classes. It is something that I want to make sure can grow along with the college. I am still working on putting things together for TRACS. There are many little details to attend to.

The container arrived last week with 8,000 books for our Theological Library!! I haven't been able to start anything with them yet. I am still doing some research and trying to figure out the best way to set up the Theological Library! This is not something that I am good at and so I do covet your prayers on this! It is very overwhelming to me!!

One major prayer request I have is concerning my work permit. To work in Zambia you are required to have a work permit. My application for my work permit was turned in 3 months before I arrived. I went down to Lusaka about a month after I got here only to find that they were missing two documents and were not able to approve my permit. I found the missing documents and turned them in and went down a second time last week. That time there was no record of my permit and so they were not able to help me. They just said to check back in a couple of days! The only problem is, right now I am on a tourist visa and it is only good for 3 months. My three months is up December 12th. If I don't get my work permit before then I might have to leave the country for a couple of days or I may be able to extend my tourist visa again! Please pray with me that it will get approved before then. Phil Hunt went to Lusaka today and is checking on it for me. I hope to be able to write again soon and tell you how God answered this prayer!

On Sunday I moved into the guest house where I will now be living. It is located right on the church property. And conveniently my office is also located on the property. My morning commute only takes but a minute!! It is completely furnished and a perfect size for me! I thank God for providing it for me!

Thank you all for your prayers!!

In Christ,

Brianne

4 November 2006

On Wednesday the Hunts previous house worker, Mary passed away. The Hunts were still in South Africa and so Helen and Tori felt that they should attend the funeral. I didn't really want to because I thought it would be inconsiderate for me to go since I didn't even know her. But Tori said that it would be fine because the family wouldn't even know her or Helen but we wanted to represent the Hunts. Mary was Catholic and the Hunts had witnessed to her for a long time but don't believe that she was ever truly saved. So to go to the funeral was very sad for us because we don't know where her eternal destiny is. It was really hard for us knowing that they thought she was in heaven because she was a good person and did good things and went to church. But we know that the only way to Heaven is through Jesus Christ. There is nothing we can do to earn our way into heaven. I was reminded of God's amazing Grace, I don't deserve to go to heaven, yet by His Grace and His love he died on the cross for me!! It's so uncomprehensible, yet so amazing!! God has also been showing me the brevity of life. Like James says in James 4:14 "Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away." The funeral service was a lot like an american funeral. However, all the ladies wear cha-tengay's. They are pieces of material that you wrap around like a skirt. But most of them are bright so it is very different from the American tradition of wearing black. At the front of the church the daughters and others were gathered on the floor for the service. They were crying so loudly and even wailing. Its their way of grieving. After the chruch service everyone has to find transport to the cemetary for the burial. But only one mini-bus comes for about 70-80 people, so it is mass confusion trying to get on the bus. We had a car and we were able to take one of the daughters with us. There was also a truck that went and there were so many people crammed in the back! I think for me the most shocking part of the day was the cemetary. On the road in there were so many graves with fresh dirt over the top. There was another funeral taking place when we arrived. And then in the section we were there were 6 other graves already dug for more burials that day!!! Death is so evident here. Every week someone I know speaks of a funeral. People are dying here at an amazing rate. Their average life expectancy is 34 years old!!! It's remarkable.

Isabi!!

This is my new kitty Isabi!! In Bemba it means Fish!! I wanted to name him something in Bemba, so Tori looked through her Bemba book and saw Isabi and it just fit! Helen brought him Friday afternoon. When I first walked in the room he was so scared. He just kept hissing. I was a little worried that he would never warm up to me. But after an hour or so he finally came out and started playing. Helen spent the night which helped too because he heard her familiar voice. He has a lot of energy and likes to play with just about everything!! At Helen's house he had 3 other cats to play with so I think it might be a little boring for him. Although I think he is managing just fine!
This weekend was great. On Friday night i went to the Hafler's house for dinner because they have a visitor that just arrived. Saturday I attended the Ladies Bible Study and also the Teen's Bible Study. There was a visitor at the teens Bible study and he came to know Christ as his Savior!!! It was so awesome to see God answer prayer!! We went up to the field after and played volleyball, and then I went to babysit for one of the missionary families. Sunday night after church we had a birthday party for our friend Esther!! Overall, it was a great weekend!!

Zambia's Independence Day Picnic

24 October is Zambia's Independence day. The young adults from Faith and the CBU students decided to have a picnic to celebrate the holiday, and they invited me to attend!! After manuevering the huge bus down the narrow path we made it to our destination. There were a couple of small waterfalls and the rest of the area around was bush. While walking around I saw a chameleon! We played a couple of games, ate, walked around and spent some time being challenged from God's Word. Pastor Saidi came along and shared with us from Matthew 16.26 which reads "For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" It was a good reminder to be investing in eternity, and not in the world. The day was so fun! There was great food and great fellowship!!

Bible Study

Last Saturday night, Bill and Sue Knipe came over along with 3 CBU students. Two of the students are possibly unsaved and so Tori set this up so that they could ask questions and Bill could be there to answer. We played a game first and then we had tacos for dinner! Then Beene, my friend from the church, broke open this fruit. I can't spell the name of it but it looks like monkey brains!! It is mainly seeds with a little fruit on the outside of it. It has sort of a bitter citrus taste to it!! I wasn't so sure about it by the looks of it but it really didn't taste bad at all. After dinner Bill pulled out his Bible and started asking some Bible questions like, Can you lose your salvation?, What does the Bible say about tongues?. . . There was really good discussion on all the topics. Many people here in Zambia go to church, so they "know" a lot about Jesus and Bible stories but they are not truly saved. Raymond that was there is a Seventh-day Adventist and he knows much about the Bible but he doesn't seem to be saved yet. Please pray for him that he would see the truth.

This is Beene with the "monkey brains!"

Lizards and Snakes

I was baking muffins the other night and a little friend decided to join me. It was a cute little lizard!! They are so small and this one seems to live in our kitchen. Which is fine because he is so small and cute! I took a picture of him next to my water bottle so you could see just how small he really is!

Then the next morning i went to get something out of the fridge. I heard something move next to it and i saw this tail quickly dissappear under the fridge!! Well of course i wasn't about to do anything, i thought that the house help would take care of it if it was really necessary!! But when i returned home from work i walked in the kitchen and a big lizard was just sitting in the middle of the floor!! but it quickly ran under the fridge once i came in the kitchen!! and then that same night i came to brush my teeth (because of the filtered water) and there was another lizard in the kitchen!! but this one wasn't quite as big as the one under the fridge and he was eating the flies so i left him alone!! I told Tori about it and she said that the big one has been coming and going for some time, and the baby one has actually been there since i came, i just finally got around to taking a picture!
ok, and one last story. only something like this would happen in Africa!! I was talking with Phil after church when his daughter came running and told him that their dog had found a snake in the yard and she needed him to come kill it before someone got bit!! I was just glad it wasn't at my house!!

Update from Zambia!!

Hello!!!

As of today I have been in Zambia for a full month!! It has been a big encouragement to me to study the different topics with these ladies. Its also been great getting to know them. Last Saturday night we had a progressive dinner with them, it was so fun! I am also attending the Young Adults Bible Study on Friday nights. It has been a huge blessing to me. The Bible study is lead by one of the missionaries but for the past 4 weeks he has asked different students at the Bible college to share with us. Every week God has taught me something! It is has been really encouraging! We also meet beforehand and play volleyball, and thats always fun!!

I have been busy working at the Bible College preparing for our Leadership Conference in December. There is a lot of planning and organizing involved. I have also been helping get the textbooks and things set up for next semester. It is a little harder to order books and things knowing that they arrive months down the road! It just means we have to plan early! The work with TRACS is coming along. Lots of little details to work out. Please pray that we get everything in order before December when the TRACS representative comes to look at the college! Those are the major things I have been working on, but also we are looking into getting our library started. There is a container coming with over 5,000 books on it, and I get to help set it up. I will admit it seems a little overwhelming at times, but I know God will give me wisdom and I will make it through! Please pray that God will give me wisdom in setting this up along with the other files and records for the college!

Also, please be in prayer for the construction of the Bible College. As of right now we are meeting in a rented facility and the offices are located at the church. Our desire is to be in the new building by the start of next semester, which is February. The ground floor is completed but we are in need of money to start on the next floor. Please pray that the money would come in before the rainy season so we can complete the building!

Thank you so much for your prayers, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate them!!!

Faith's Children Village

On Saturday i was able to go visit the orphanage. Helen had invited Tori and I so we brought lunch! After lunch i went with Helen to the teen Bible study. And then Tori showed me around the orphanage. It was really nice. There are 4 houses i think, with 12 kids in each and then a house mother. Tori took me around to meet the house mothers but they all seemed to be out at the time. But we got to hang out with some of the kids so that was fun. I didn't get to stay too long because we wanted to make it back before dark. Which was good because when we got to our house there was no electricity for about 3 hours so it was good that we came home while we still had a little light so we could find the candles! But Phil wants me to go out again to the village sometime and stay for weekend! i can't wait!

Isn't he adorable!??

This is the path to Faith Baptist Church Kakolo

Just hanging out with some of the girls!!

This is just one of the many ANT "hills" around the village! i thought i would stand next to it so you could get a better idea of how large they are!! crazy huh?!?

This is for you Mom!!!

Because you like cows so much i decided to take a picture!! CABC is in the process of building. The land is already purchased and the building has started on the dorm/classrooms. Yesterday Phil took me to see it and i got a couple picutres. the only thing is, the workers were going to have to stop working today because we ran out of money. God had already provided $75K for the project and that was all used up and we are still in need of another $75K to continue working. But like Phil said Attempt great things for God, Expect great things from God. Phil knew that God would provide... in His time, not ours. Then yesterday he got an email from a church saying they were giving $10K for the project!!! Definte answer to prayer!! But if you could please pray with us that God would continue to provide the rest of the money needed. We know that He will!!!

My future office! Thank you to all of you who were praying for me as I traveled. Everything went so smoothly and I received all my luggage in Ndola!! The flight was long but the plane was empty so it made it real easy to sleep!! I arrived Tuesday night around 6pm and we drove another hour to Kitwe. It was already dark so I wasn't able to see much but from what I could see it was awesome I don't know how to describe it. Flying in you could see the different cities and instead of cars you saw people. Then driving, there were people everywhere walking and riding bikes! Its a lot different than America because they don't have street lights so driving is scary at night and plus all the people along side the road makes it even more interesting!

I am staying with Tori Barrett in her home. It is so nice, a lot like home. Of course there are differences but I am not living in a hut or anything like that! Tori has helped me immensely getting used to the culture and answering all my questions! I am so thankful for her. Last week there was no work at the college yet because they were on a break so I helped Tori out at the school. I tutored a boy who couldn't read and then gave a spelling test and took the girls P.E. class out to play football/soccer!! That was fun!!

On Saturday I attended the Ladies Bible Study and got to meet a lot of the ladies from the church. That afternoon I went to the Teen Bible Study and am hoping to get plugged in there and help out! After the Bible Study we go up to the playing field and play volleyball. Its lots of fun!

Yesterday I went to church in Kwacha. It was their chartering service where they recognized the members who have been there since the beginning. They also baptized 18 people! That was awesome to see!! After church we had a meal together! It was my first time trying African food. Tori has always made me American food! But I really liked the African food. It was fried chicken, beef, rice, coleslaw, and inshima (which is a corn paste). There are no forks so I used my hand! That was a new thing for me!!

Today was my first day working for the college. I am just trying to get a feel of things and how things work. My main project will be working through getting accredited through TRACS. Also I will be helping them get their educational records all set up. At times it seems like too much but I know that God will give me wisdom. It is so exciting to be a part of this ministry. It is the only one of its kind in Africa and I am privileged to be a part!!

God has already taught me so much!! Its really been awesome!!

Thank you for your prayers!!
Brianne

I just wanted to share with everyone something that happened yesterday!! Tori invited me to go along on a visit with her. There was a lady in the church that has been sick with malaria for close to 3 weeks. She just wanted to stop in and say that we missed her and that we were praying for her.

To give a little background, she lives in the Chipata compound. Its right near by but much different than where I am staying. These compounds have no water or electricity. I am not positive on this number but there are close to 10,000 people living there. To live there you basically just go find some land and start building and you maybe pay $10 a month! And you can't drive there... so you get the picture sort of...

We parked the car as close as we could and had someone show us where she lived. When we got there we were glad to see that she was up and doing the laundry, because it meant that she was feeling a bit better. We went inside and began to ask about how she was feeling. Then Tori asked her to share her salvation testimony and how she came to Faith Baptist. She quickly told us about how she had found out about Faith but totally ignored the question about salvation. Tori then asked her if she were to die next week where would she go? She couldn't answer and said that was a really hard question! So Tori then was able to share the gospel with her. Then Karen, a Zambian who had come with us, also tried explaining so she could understand more clearly. After awhile it became clear that she was having a hard time speaking in English so Karen started talking to her in Bemba. After about an hour or so she said that she wanted to accept Christ as her Saviour!!! It was Awesome!!!!!! So if you could please pray for Dorothy as she is a brand new child of God. Also if you could pray for her homelife, it is a little rough right now!!

I thought you would all like to hear that!! It sure made my day!! What an awesome God we serve!!

Leaving for Zambia

So I am going to give this blogging thing a try!
